Briefly then:
Weeks and weeks of gearing up for the term and then getting stuck into it, so nothing from me for ages. The first-year course is a workout to say the least, but we (my Dutch colleague Joost) have been sorting it out.
So what’s been going on? Well, I’ve certainly been poking around Wellington with my camera as of late, soaking up its “urban” vibe. Went on a great tour given by Tom Beard at wellurban, as part of the Bloghui (meeting) which took place last weekend. It was a great time and the man knows so much about past and future plans for development in Wellington. I could just pick his brain about so much, especially his eyewear. Fantastic, in the end, and the man likes alleys almost as much as I do (though I’ve nearly exhausted them by this point - time for some new urban quarters I think).
Once I settle into a groove, I’ll put up my Berlin paper, on play and neo-liberalism and the “creative city.” Needs a few bits and pieces tightened up, but it’s a decent little insight into my Berlin time. Will twist and turn it for a public lecture here later in the year, to be given at the Film Archive. And if we have any luck, we’ll get one or two of the Pingpong Country Golden Boys down here in the early Spring (October for you Northerners).
In the romance department (since some people asked): Her name is Shelley and she’s coming to live with me in a few weeks. I probably shouldn’t say that too loudly as she’s got a dissertation to finish in the meantime and doesn’t need to be reminded of that deadline too often. She’s great, fantastic really, just so you know, in oh so many ways, and more will no doubt be said as things unfold. There will be stories…
Music, with which I’ve been remiss, my sonically-starved readers. Some things to keep you smiling and laughing and to let you in on my state of mind as of late (save for the Hildegard Knef, which speaks to other kinds of non-romantic woes):
Bob Taylor - Wowsville
Groovers - Groovy
Hildegard Knef - From Here On It Got Rough
La Lupe - Fever
Unknown - Marihuana
Le G.
